Couple on a date

Going on dates can already be nerve-racking enough, but especially so if you have braces. You may feel self-conscious about them, but you should try your best not to worry. Undergoing orthodontics is a normal experience that millions have and will be going through. To help make navigating your love life with your brackets and wires a bit easier, here are four tips you should keep in mind.

1.)  Don’t Fret About Your Smile

Many people are worried about how their smile looks with braces. While they may not like the metal look, there’s no need to hide it. After all, you will be undergoing your treatment for several months, so it’s likely this date will not be the only one you’ll have. Try your best to embrace them and show off that you’re getting a healthier bite you’ll love in the end.

2.)  Keep Your Food Braces-Friendly

If your date involves getting food, then be sure to pick things that are easy to chew. Hard, crunchy, and sticky choices can break a wire or bracket if you aren’t careful, so lean toward softer meals. Pasta, rice, grilled chicken, or smoothies are just some great examples you can order. However, if there aren’t many options, then you can get tough items, but be sure to cut them into bite-sized pieces.

3.)  Make Sure Your Braces Are Clean

After you finish your meal, you may be worried about food being stuck between your wires or on your brackets. In order to get rid of them, carry around a small dental essentials kit. Having a travel toothbrush, floss, orthodontic wax, mirror, and anything else you need can help you make sure your smile is clean. Rinsing with water can also prove to be helpful.

4.)  Don’t Stress About Kissing

You might’ve heard a myth before that kissing with braces isn’t even possible, but this isn’t true at all. Ending your night out with it can still happen, but it does take a little time to get used to it. With patience and a slow, gentle approach, you can avoid problems.

In the end, confidence is key when it comes to dating with braces. You won’t have them on forever, but your results will last you a lifetime. Act like they aren’t much of a big deal, and you can feel your best laughing and smiling throughout.
