Healthy Teeth and Gums Come First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You need a good foundation on which to build a new smile. In other words, it’s important to have good oral health before getting braces. Cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems may need to be treated before orthodontic treatment begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you do get braces, be prepared for the fact that they can make brushing and flossing more challenging. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene throughout treatment is therefore especially important. Otherwise, plaque buildup can contribute to cavities, gum inflammation, and permanent white spots on your teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Might Have to Change Your Diet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This one can be a bitter pill to swallow for grown-ups who are accustomed to eating whatever they like. But the reality is that if you want to keep your treatment on track and not break any wires or brackets, it will behoove you to steer clear of very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoid popcorn, chewing ice, nuts, raw fruits and vegetables, caramel candies, tough meats \u2013 you get the idea. If you\u2019re ever in doubt, ask your orthodontist if a food is appropriate to eat. They\u2019ll also advise you what to lay off of when you begin treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expect Some Discomfort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Braces apply gentle, consistent pressure to gradually move your teeth. It’s normal to experience some soreness or tenderness, especially after they\u2019re first placed or following your monthly adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soft foods can make eating more comfortable during these periods. Your orthodontic team can also recommend ways to manage temporary discomfort, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, be sure to pick up some orthodontic wax in case those wires and brackets start to poke and irritate your gums or the insides of your mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Treatment Plan Will Be Personalized<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the first questions you\u2019ll probably want to ask is how long you\u2019ll have to wear braces. That will be determined by your orthodontist during your initial consultation when they examine your teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019ll closely evaluate your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw using X-rays or other types of imaging. The length of treatment varies depending on the amount of tooth movement needed and the complexity of your case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
